Shopify is a superb platform for CBD and vape stores — with one catch that trips up almost everyone: Shopify Payments won’t process your orders. We design, build and migrate Shopify stores for high-risk brands, with the gateway, apps and compliance sorted.
The Shopify catch, explained
Shopify’s terms allow CBD and vape products to be sold in the UK, but Shopify Payments (their built-in Stripe-powered gateway) excludes them. That has three consequences we design around.
What goes wrong
- Stores launch on Shopify Payments, take orders for a few weeks, then get the payouts frozen and the account closed.
- Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay via Shopify Payments are unavailable, so conversion drops if nothing replaces them.
- Shopify charges an additional transaction fee when you use a third-party gateway.
- Many popular apps (reviews, email, upsells) have their own CBD/vape bans and close accounts later.

Shopify is our usual recommendation for CBD and vape brands that want reliability, a great admin, strong app ecosystem and the ability to scale without worrying about hosting. It costs more per month and per transaction than WooCommerce, and it is less flexible for unusual requirements.
- Choose Shopify for D2C brands, multi-channel sellers, teams without technical staff, and anyone who wants the platform to “just work”.
- Consider WooCommerce for content-heavy sites, complex B2B pricing, tight margins on high volumes, or when you want full ownership.
- Consider custom for marketplaces, unusual subscription logic or integration-heavy operations.

Shopify FAQs
Can I sell CBD on Shopify in the UK?
Yes. CBD products that are legal in the UK can be sold on Shopify, but you must use a third-party payment gateway because Shopify Payments excludes them. Our full guide walks through the setup.
Can I sell vape products on Shopify in the UK?
Yes, with the same gateway caveat, plus age verification and TRPR-compliant product presentation. Shopify’s own policies also restrict how vape products can be promoted through its marketing channels.
