Selling CBD on Shopify in the UK: the complete guide

Yes, you can sell CBD on Shopify in the UK — and vape products too. The platform allows it. What most guides gloss over is that Shopify Payments doesn’t, and that a handful of other decisions made in the first week determine whether your store is still trading in a year. Here is the setup that works.

Last reviewed 18 September 2026 · By the 420 Web Design team · Platform policies change; verify before relying on any specific point.

Step 1 — Understand what Shopify does and doesn’t allow

Shopify’s acceptable-use policy permits the sale of legal CBD and hemp products, and legal vape and e-liquid products, in the UK. It also requires you to comply with local law (Novel Foods, TRPR, age restrictions) and reserves the right to remove stores that don’t.

Shopify Payments, however, excludes CBD, vape and e-liquid merchants in the UK. If you activate it and start trading, expect a review, held payouts and closure. The fix is simple: never turn it on.

Step 2 — Get a third-party payment gateway before you launch

Choose a specialist high-risk gateway that (a) accepts your products in the UK and (b) has a Shopify integration. Apply in week one; underwriting takes one to three weeks. Shopify will add a third-party transaction fee (the percentage depends on your plan), so factor that into pricing and plan selection.

Because Shop Pay and Shopify-managed Apple Pay/Google Pay are unavailable without Shopify Payments, configure the gateway’s own wallet support and make sure 3-D Secure is enabled. Add an open-banking pay-by-bank option as a lower-fee secondary method if your gateway or an app supports it. Full detail in our UK CBD payment gateway guide.

Step 3 — Choose apps that won’t ban you later

Many popular Shopify apps have their own restrictions on CBD and vape — including several email, review, subscription and marketing apps. Check the acceptable-use policy of every app before you build a process around it. Categories to vet carefully:

  • Email/SMS — several major platforms prohibit or restrict CBD; vape email is restricted by law
  • Reviews — some review platforms decline the category
  • Subscriptions — check that recurring billing works with your third-party gateway
  • Age verification — required for vape; recommended for CBD
  • Marketing integrations — Google and Meta channel apps will not let you advertise these products

We maintain a shortlist of apps that currently accept the category and build from it.

Step 4 — Set up compliance on the storefront

  • Age gate on entry (all vape stores; recommended for CBD)
  • Age verification at checkout for vape, to your acquirer’s requirement
  • Certificates of analysis linked from every CBD product page
  • Ingredient, strength and volume data in a consistent, structured format
  • Disclaimers: not intended to diagnose/treat/cure; not for under-18s; keep out of reach of children; pregnancy/breastfeeding advice for CBD ingestibles
  • Nicotine warnings and TRPR-compliant product data for vape
  • Shipping rules: restrict vape products where required and add age-verified delivery
  • Terms, privacy, returns and cookie consent

Step 5 — Write product pages that sell without claims

Describe the product, its format, strength, ingredients, origin, extraction and testing. Explain how to use it. Don’t say what it treats. Use customer reviews about experience and quality, not health outcomes. This isn’t just compliance: it is also what underwriters, Google and AI assistants respond to.

Step 6 — Build for organic growth from day one

You will not be running Google Shopping or Meta ads, so your Shopify store must earn its traffic. That means clean collection structure, unique category copy, structured data, fast theme performance (app discipline matters), an education section, and consistent brand information across the web. See SEO and AEO.

Common mistakes that get CBD and vape Shopify stores shut

  • Launching on Shopify Payments “just to get going”
  • Medicinal claims in product titles, descriptions or reviews
  • Selling ingestible CBD without Novel Foods linkage
  • No age verification on a vape store
  • Running ads through the Google or Meta sales channels
  • Building the customer list in an email app that prohibits the category
  • Copying US product content wholesale

Migrating from another platform? Map every URL and set up 301 redirects, start the gateway application before the move, and run the new store in parallel before switching DNS. We do this regularly — see ecommerce.

Shopify CBD & vape FAQs

Can I sell CBD on Shopify UK?

Yes. Shopify permits legal CBD products in the UK. You must use a third-party payment gateway rather than Shopify Payments, and comply with Novel Foods, CAP Code and other UK rules.

Can I sell vapes on Shopify UK?

Yes, with a third-party gateway, age verification and TRPR-compliant product information. Shopify’s own marketing channels will not promote vape products.

Why was my Shopify Payments account closed?

Because CBD, vape and e-liquid are excluded from Shopify Payments. Payouts may be held during review. Move to a specialist gateway — and if you are reading this before it happens, do it now.

Does Shopify charge extra for third-party gateways?

Yes — a third-party transaction fee that varies by plan, on top of the gateway’s own fees. On higher plans the percentage is lower, which can make upgrading worthwhile at volume.

Is WooCommerce better than Shopify for CBD?

Neither is universally better. Shopify is simpler and more reliable to run; WooCommerce avoids platform transaction fees and is more flexible. We build both — see ecommerce.
